The gap between the performance of Arkansas students and students in the nation is closing, as shown by scores on the 2005 National Assessment of Educational Progress, or the "Nation's Report Card." In fact, Arkansas was one of a handful of states that showed improvement on three of the four tests since they were last administered in 2003. Gains occurred in fourth grade reading, fourth grade math and eighth grade math.

Arkansas is also among the nation's leaders in educational technology. Education Week's eighth annual report on the state of educational technology, Technology Counts 2005, reported that in Arkansas there are 3.5 students per Internet-connected computer and 7.5 students per Internet-connected computer in classrooms.

In the Electronic Transfer: Moving Technology Dollars in New Directions report, Arkansas ranked second in the nation on the indicators pertaining to the use of technology. Arkansas was recognized for including technology in the state standards for students, the establishment of a virtual school, and offering computer-based assessments. The report also stated that 100 percent of the public schools in Arkansas have access to the Internet.
