Dr. John R. Brinkley, nationally known as the "Goat Doctor" lived at Marylake in the East End community of Saline County from 1937 - 1942. He received the name because he would transplant the sex glands of young buck goats into humans to restore sexual potency and good health.

In November 2000, the voters approved an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution that enables local governments to issue bonds or notes to finance improvements in a redevelopment district. The bonds will be paid back from the increased tax revenue generated as a result of the improvements. A redevelopment district must be in an area that is considered blighted, deteriorated or underdeveloped.
